Two Fabrics That Look Similar on a Swatch Card
Coral fleece and flannel are frequently offered side by side, and on a small swatch the difference can be hard to see. In bulk production, however, they behave quite differently in terms of drape, warmth, print capability and cost per square metre. Understanding those differences early prevents an expensive correction later in the season.
How the Two Are Constructed
Flannel is typically a woven or knitted base that is brushed to raise a nap on one or both faces. The brushing action lifts fibre from the yarn itself, so the surface is dense and the pile is short. Coral fleece is a knitted polyester structure with a distinctly curled, granular surface texture. Its pile is finer and more three dimensional, and the fabric usually carries more air within the structure for a given weight.
Warmth and Weight for Money
Because coral fleece traps more air, it delivers comparable warmth at a lower gram weight than flannel. For blankets and throws where shipping weight matters, that can translate into a meaningful freight saving on a container load. Flannel, by contrast, tends to feel firmer and holds a folded edge more crisply, which buyers often prefer for sleepwear and structured quilted products.
Print and Colour Performance
Flannel accepts rotary and digital print well because the base is relatively flat before brushing, and fine line detail survives the nap raising process more reliably. Coral fleece has a more uneven surface, so very fine patterns can soften slightly. Where a design depends on crisp small motifs, flannel is usually the safer route. Where the design is bold or tonal, coral fleece performs well and often at a lower cost.

How to Decide
Start from the consumer experience you are selling. If the promise is lightweight warmth and a soft cosy hand, coral fleece is often the efficient choice. If the promise is a tailored printed product with clean edges and durable colour, flannel is generally stronger. Request both as finished samples at production gram weight and wash them before deciding, because the difference after laundering is where most surprises appear.
