Why GSM Is the First Number to Get Right
Grams per square metre is the single specification that most reliably predicts both the cost and the consumer feel of a plush fabric. Specify it too low and the product reads as thin and cheap. Specify it too high and you pay for warmth the end user may not need. Because plush is sold by weight in most transactions, GSM also determines your landed cost more directly than almost any other variable.
The Difference Between Greige and Finished Weight
Plush fabric passes through brushing, dyeing, printing and sometimes embossing after knitting or weaving. Each step changes the weight. A mill that quotes a greige weight and delivers a finished roll is quoting two different things, and the gap is often five to fifteen percent. Always confirm whether the quoted figure is measured on the finished, ready to cut fabric.
Practical Weight Bands by Application
- Light weight, roughly 180 to 220 GSM, suits toy bodies, small accessories and applique
- Mid weight, roughly 220 to 280 GSM, suits blankets, throws, robes and pet products
- Heavy weight, roughly 280 to 350 GSM and above, suits premium bedding and structured quilted items
These bands are starting points rather than rules. A toy buyer may deliberately choose a heavier fabric for durability, while a blanket buyer shipping long distances may choose a lighter coral fleece to control freight cost without losing perceived warmth.
GSM and Durability
Heavier fabric is not automatically more durable. Durability in plush depends on pile density, fibre tenacity and how the fabric is brushed. A densely brushed 240 GSM fabric can outlast a loosely brushed 300 GSM one. When evaluating samples, pull gently at the surface and check how much fibre releases, then wash the sample and inspect for pilling at the fold lines.
Testing Before You Commit
Ask for a finished sample at the exact production GSM, not a lighter reference swatch. Weigh it yourself on a scale accurate to a tenth of a gram, cutting a square of known dimensions. This simple check catches most specification drift before it becomes a container level problem.
