Fabric destined for products used by infants and children is held to a stricter standard than general home textiles, and the requirements vary meaningfully between destination markets. For an importer, the risk is not only regulatory. A fastness or fibre content failure on a children's line typically reaches social media before it reaches the returns desk.
Documentation to Collect
Before production starts, confirm what your destination market requires and collect the corresponding documentation. This commonly includes fibre content verification, colour fastness test reports, and where applicable formal safety testing for the finished article rather than the fabric alone. Keep in mind that many markets assess the finished product, so fabric level certificates may not be sufficient on their own.
Fabric Properties That Matter Most
- Surface fibre release, since loose fibre is the main ingestion and inhalation concern
- Colour fastness to rubbing, wet and dry, because the fabric contacts skin and saliva
- Shrinkage control, since distorted products no longer fit or lie flat
- Consistent nap direction, which affects how seams and folds read on the finished item
Avoiding Loose Fibre Problems
Loose fibre is the most common defect in brushed fabric intended for children's products. It originates in aggressive brushing combined with insufficient fibre fixation. The practical countermeasures are a shorter denser nap, a proper washing and drying cycle after brushing, and a finished sample test that simulates use. Ask specifically how many washing cycles the fabric has passed before it is considered ready to cut.
Sampling Discipline
For children's lines, approve samples at production weight and after laundering, not from a presentation swatch. Photograph the sample under consistent lighting and retain it as the reference for bulk. When the bulk arrives, compare against that retained sample in the same lighting rather than relying on memory.
